Feeling far away
Last night was a rough one. I called my dad and got his voicemail, then called my mom to see what she was up to with my nephews who are spending a few weeks with their Grammy and Popo. I called about an hour into their naps and the oldest woke up in time to chat with me. He's growing up so quickly...he talks in the cutest voice my ears have ever heard and articulates the most innocently sweet things. I fought back a well of tears when he told me that after he goes to visit Austin, he's coming to visit me - next Friday. I told him I wasn't sure if he would be able to and explained how long a trip in the plane would be for him. "Well, what about in a car," he asked. After a short explanation for the Atlantic, I told him we could see each other on Friday, but through the computer. I probably just shattered his little anticipating heart - and mine too; I was a mess until about 1 am. I miss my family, and even though I'm crazy-happy here, it's so much tougher than I ever expected to be so far away from them.
Visual summary
I know I promised to blog about our Texas trip, but the only people who read my blog were there anyway, so I think linking to an album will suffice for a summary. It was a blast, and I enjoyed every minute of it - even when my nephew shot me with a water gun while I was feeling like poop and so exhausted I could barely walk. Love you, Nate! :)
But, really, it was the perfect way to introduce Gui to the rest of the familia, and we couldn't have asked for anything more (except for maybe more time to eat at every place we had on our list). I can't wait for the next visit!!

I've had a busy week
I've been over-indulging in everything I love this past week, including the following:
Tex-Mex breakfast in bed - huevos rancheros, refried beans, potatoes and homemade tortillas on our first morning in San Antonio (yes, there was complimentary champagne, too).
The Mexican Plate (cheese enchilada, beef taco, tamale, rice and beans) at Mi Tierra - man, this place is so good.
I'll blog about more specifics of our trip soon. It was such a fun week, but much too short. I wish I could have brought everyone back to Paris with me. There's never enough time to catch up, but I guess that just means I'll have to make more trips back!

Beef and Chicken nachos on the Riverwalk (beef always wins), complete with the tastiest Herradura margarita I've ever tasted!

Breakfast at Joe's Bakery, starting with Menudo and amazing (constantly refilled!) coffee, ending with a delicious carne guisada taco. YUM!
Sushi with friends at Maiko - downtown Austin. The crab-filled fried avocado with habanero sauce was TO. DIE. FOR. I've dreamt about it ever since.
Mom's homemade tortillas - I still get the little one...this time in a heart shape!
Guillaume pretending he had something to do with the creation of the delicious goodness that is my mom's tortilla. It was still a sweet thought.
Being around the two cutest faces in the world.

What a wonderful day
To be starting my life with the love of my life is a spectacular thing! We never intended to be married so soon, but it could not have been at a more perfect time or place. We exchanged our ouis (I exchanged a oui and a yes) among our French family and friends (as well as my amazing American mom) on an absolutely gorgeous sunny April day just south of Paris. It seemed like a dream. The surreality of the day totally outweighed the reality of walking on my 4-inch heels from the mairie to the park to the reception. It was the most lovely day I've ever witnessed in Paris - perfect weather, perfect champagne, perfect company. Even the translator that we were dreading to employ was the perfect answer to my imperfect French, and certainly made our ceremony that much more special. I also indulged in the best meal I've had in France that evening with Guillaume, his father and a few other relatives. I wish I could share the experience with you all in a blog post, but it's impossible. Suffice it to say that our French wedding was beyond any expectation I could have ever had, and it was the perfect start to the marriage commitment Guillaume and I look forward to fulfilling.
Pre-Christmas update
The Christmas festivities for Guillaume's family begin tomorrow evening, so with my fully-charged camera, I'm sure to take tons of pics over the next few days to share with you when it's all said and done. Before that, I thought I'd share a short picture review of what we've been doing the past few days while we prepare for the holidays.
Ma nouvelle apparence
translation: my new look
Although it's likely to last for only a fleeting moment, I decided to spice up my blog with some festive colors. I'm not usually the festive type, but since this will be the first year I spend Christmas away from my family, the holiday somehow feels more important than usual. But, I'm really excited about how Christmas works in France, and I can't wait to see Paris in the dead of winter. The year I spent Thanksgiving in London was interesting, and although it's only an American holiday, it was cool to see people still celebrating with turkey and stuffing served at restaurants. But, I do remember missing the food and fun that usually warms my tummy and my heart during Turkey Day, so I'll likely have similar feelings while I'm celebrating Christmas with Guillaume and his family in Paris.
Besides the new look of my blog, I've starting thinking about how my own personal look might change while I'm away. I know I can be a chameleon of sorts, and usually change myself in some way to fit into a new crowd or a new place. So, I'm hesitant to buy the latest trendy sweater here before making my way to Europe where la mode is, likely, not on the same trend as Austin. Yesterday, after a six-hour brunch, I spent a total of $5.00 (parking!) for the entire day, mostly because I was indecisive about buying a pair of shoes here that I might not wear in France. That's definitely a new record for me!
