A portrait of Avienne once a week, every week, in 2013.

Trente-neuf :: Cooling off inside.

When the hat and shoes go on, it's time for some outdoor fun, but it's been too hot all week to stay out for too long. Gui's mom arrived last weekend, and Avienne has been keeping her Nana busy, showing her all of her favorite backyard spots. She hates to come inside, so when we're cooling down before heading out again, she stands by the window, looking out for any birds or squirrels she might be missing.  I've been trying to convince Gui that we need to move someplace north for some cooler weather, but he's not quite ready to leave Austin and our year-round summer, yet.

Trente-huit :: Trying to keep up with this little firecracker.

Not more than a minute after I took this picture, was Avienne shoving a crayon into her mouth and then scream-crying because I wouldn't let her do so.  She has always been a happy and rather uncomplicated baby, but we're starting to understand that raising an independent, emotional and feisty person, like Avienne, is going to be a challenge for us novice parents. No matter how many books and blogs I read, it's hard to feel like I'm doing everything I can for her to thrive during our days together, but I know that being a mom isn't supposed to be easy. Right?

Trente-sept :: My little sunshine.

This girl would live outside if she could.  I'm thinking we'll have to plan a camping trip once the weather cools down so she can get a good dose of the great outdoors.  She's less and less interested in swings and now prefers to wander around the backyard or park, discovering patches of dry grass or fallen tree branches.  I'm so looking forward to cooler days and more exploring outside with this little adventurer.

As I was scrolling through my pictures for this post, I noticed there's a very common theme going on with us lately. It's feeling like summer is wrapping up and we're living like fall is a day away, I guess hoping to coax the seasons into changing.

We're taking advantage of occasional rain showers to cool things down enough for us to enjoy an evening bike ride.

I've been putting our oven to work roasting late summer vegetables and baking everything under the sun, including a massive fig tart.

I've also been regularly working little-by-little to finish up some hibernating knitting projects, but after learning a new craft this past weekend, my needles have been temporarily replaced by a borrowed loom.  I can't tell you how gratifying it is to finish a scarf in under three hours.  If you ever get a chance to take a weaving class, do it! It's incredibly easy, and I doubt you'll ever regret learning how to turn yarn into fabric.

And finally, Avienne has been learning so many new things lately. Walking is her biggest accomplishment of late, but she's also so close at perfecting her dismount.  It's so cute (and slightly terrifying) to see her spin around from wherever she's sitting to get her feet down first, then smile and clap with pride when they hit the floor. She's becoming a real toddler, and it's so bittersweet.

Trente-six :: Loving her time at the baby gym.

I didn't once take out my camera this past week, so I'm relying on this quick shot that I took from my cell phone. We've been going to the local Gymboree a couple of times a week, and Avienne absolutely loves it. Besides the room full of tunnels and slides, she so enjoys interacting with other babes - some older, some younger. She is such a people person that I'm finding this time spent with her peers to be rather indispensable. And it sure beats playing at the playground when it's 103° every single day. (Summer, please go away!)

Trente-cinq :: Taco time.

Normally a good eater, this past week, Avienne has not had much of an appetite.  I'm calling it a growth spurt because it's too hard to believe that my girl just isn't interested in food anymore. When she does have an appetite, though, tacos are among her favorite things to eat - especially the breakfast variety. We're lucky to live in a city where good tacos are aplenty, and we frequent our favorite spot for those stuffed tortillas sometimes a little too often.

Vignt-quatre :: A typical coffee shop photo session on a lazy Sunday.

This little baby is such a spark of fire these days.  Her hair is growing, her teeth are cutting and she is turning into a big girl with a bubbly personality.  She keeps me busy but makes my days feel so full.  And, I could look at those eyes every day of my life and never stop being intrigued by them.  I just love her.
