Let's celebrate pumpkins!

I miss big-city life, but sometimes, it makes me so happy that we can hop in our car and get to the middle of nowhere in 30 minutes or less.  During the month of October, farms all around Austin host pumpkin patches and festivals where kids can run wild and parents can get some great photos. ;) Avienne is at such a fun age right now, that going a few extra miles out of town seemed worth it for her to have some fun on a farm.

The Elgin Christmas Tree Farm hosts a pretty grand pumpkin festival for kids that includes a petting zoo, pony rides, hayrides, pumpkin decorating, rubber duck races, mazes, dancing, and of course, a pumpkin patch.  It was a perfectly crisp fall day when we were there and Avienne was in hog heaven, running wildly across the open field, playing with trucks and tractors, throwing beanbags and climbing pumpkins.  She was a little apprehensive about the petting zoo, but she was content with looking and pointing at all the animals she recognized.  We met up with friends and their babes and pretty much followed all our kids around while they did their thing.

Before leaving, we snagged some Elgin sausage wraps (so good!) and corn on the cob to make a quick picnic in front of a field of Christmas trees. It was a truly perfect day. Well, up until that flat tire we got while leaving the farm. But, even that wasn't so bad (Avienne was passed out through most of it, and it turned out to be pretty painless). We are really looking forward to going back to the farm later next month to cut down our Christmas tree!
