It's October. Let's bake!

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Early one morning last week, when we didn't have much to do, and I was feeling hungry (and lazy), we decided to bake some pumpkin bread (I used a mix of this and this recipe...I can never choose one!). As soon as October rolls around, like most folks, all I can think about are gourds and spices. It's almost instinctual. I haven't been feeling much in the mood for ultra-sweet holiday lattes this year, so I'd been waiting for a good day to get my spicy, pumpkiny bake on.

It was so much fun (and took so much longer) to bake with Avienne! I started off with giving her the pretty menial task of filling the muffin tin with paper wrappers, but she pretty much called me out on making it too easy for her, so I put her on stirring duty. Let me tell you, this girl likes to stir. She would stir, stitch hands, stir some more, take a peek in the bowl to make sure she was still stirring something, and then quickly stir again.  I had to bribe her with walnuts and dried currants to get her away from the bowl. Then, she lost all interest in helping me bake and focused all her attention on eating as many currants as she could before I put them all into the batter.

It was such a good time (except for the part when I ran out of flour and had to make a quick run out to get some, hence, the wardrobe change), and I'm looking forward to more baking sessions with my girl, especially as the holidays approach. I remember Gui telling me how he baked with his mom almost every week as a kid, and I do hope we can start the same tradition in our family.
