Daytrip to the beach

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

I should have known Avienne would love the beach. She falls asleep every night to the sound of waves sweeping over sand.  So, it was only natural that she'd barrel towards the water once we hit the beach on Sunday afternoon.  It was a last minute trip, planned quickly before our visitor from France returns home.  I haven't been to Port Aransas in years, so I was as surprised as they were to be welcomed by the clear, warm water and soft sand.  No more turning my nose up at Texas beaches - it was way more magical than I remembered from school trips and vacations past.

Avienne thoroughly enjoyed splashing through the waves and of course, eating sand.  As much as I love myself a beach, I sure do hate sand. Even more so when it's in every fold of my pudgy baby's skin.  We took a dip in the pool to rinse off a bit, too.  And, in the evening, we indulged in plates of fresh seafood at a quaint, but completely fantastic little spot a block or two from the beach.  I can't wait to go back next year!

The forecast called for rain, but it held out one more day, seemingly just for us.  The thunderstorms blew in right as we were heading out of town, so, we found refuge at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi. It was a nice way to end our micro-vacation to south Texas.  Avienne seemed to be most fond of the dolphins, but I couldn't get over the creepy/beautiful creatures in the jellyfish room. (How on earth do those things live on the same planet as us?!)

Although road-tripping is likely not Avienne's favorite (she cried quite a bit on the way down there), I think as she gets older, she'll understand that four hours in car is a small price to pay to enjoy all the beauty and indulgences that a beach can offer.  That's definitely what I've learned.

"A portrait of Avienne once a week, every week, in 2013."

Trente-trois :: Lunching with mama.

I really love spending my days with Avienne.  She is so fun and sweet, and she garners smiles from strangers that I would not otherwise see if she weren't with me.  Last week, we tried out the local Gymboree class after a friend brought us there for a bit of free playtime.  We don't usually do many things specifically geared for Avienne (except for storytime and rare playdates with friends), as she usually just tags along with me while I run errands and otherwise get things done.  But, we really loved interacting with other kids (and parents), and Avienne could not get enough of all the fun equipment they have for her to jump around on.  All that to explain the stamp on her hand, which she received after the class.

We grabbed lunch after Gymobree class at the deli near our house before heading back home.  It's clear that Avienne really enjoys eating as much as her parents do - she's always eager to try whatever we have on our plates which makes things so much easier for us when we're eating out.  I hope her curiosity for food never ceases because there really is no better thing on earth than a good meal, right?

Trente-deux :: Shenanigans with papa.

We were at a birthday party two weekends ago (I'm so behind!) and Avienne had the best time jumping around outside with the other little kiddos.  It's SO hot in Austin right now.  I feel like we're living in a never-ending summer.  Keeping Avienne hydrated is a must, so if she wants to drink out of a water bottle instead of from a straw, a wet shirt and puddles of water are a small price to pay to keep her cool.  And lately, she's been tossing herself upside down any time she can, which makes for one wiggly little girl.  On this day, we were trying to keep her from throwing herself upside down while she had water in her hand and mouth.  It was a fun struggle.

Today has been one of "those" days.  It started off fine, with smiles and snuggles in bed with my girl, but it's been on a downward spiral ever since.  It all began with a lovely eye stye I discovered in my left eye after Avienne slammed her hand into my face while I had my glasses on.  Fun.

From then on, the day just seemed to unravel. Avienne has had a very bipolar personality all day - going from smiles and laughs to tears and screams in two seconds flat.  Mostly, though, she's just been extra grumpy about everything.  I made the mistake of leaving just after noon to look for a place to have lunch with her.  I was hoping we could get a breath of fresh air and change of scenery to cheer us up.

Well, Chipotle had a line out the door at 12:30, so we tried a deli near our house only to see that there were no available tables and a line waiting for a free one.  Thankfully, there was another Chipotle in the same shopping center - one without a line.  But, a group of moms had monopolized the only three highchairs in the restaurant, so our lunch out turned into take-away lunch at home.  That wasn't so bad except that Avienne kept screaming after every bite of food she took. For. No. Reason. Good times. (Not good times.)

We went out for smoothies (and to pick up my wallet that I had left at Juiceland yesterday - more fun!), but Avienne wanted nothing to do with it.  She [not so] kindly requested in her loudest voice that we leave as soon as our smoothies arrived. So we did.

Now, this little girl won't take a nap, and the house is a straight-up disaster.  I love Avienne to bits, but man, she can be exhausting!  All I want to do is go to bed and have a do-over of today.  Where's the reset button?

"A portrait of Avienne once a week, every week, in 2013."

Trente-et-un ::  A swing of her own.

Our new house came with a playscape that includes a couple of swings.  Before we moved in, this well-loved "baby" swing was installed to replace one of them, and Avienne couldn't be more grateful.  She stands by the window and points to the swingset more than once every day.  I'm looking forward to cooler temperatures (and non-mosquito season) so we can go swinging more than once a day, which is all we can handle right now in this heat.  I'm developing a love-hate (mostly hate?) relationship with Texas, lately...haven't you noticed?

Trente :: A ray of sunshine. Always.

We moved last weekend, so this post is a week late!  And, this photo was taken at our old house, in Avienne's corner of our former living room.  We will miss that old house mostly because of all of the memories that were made there, but we're already happier after a living a week in our new place.  Honestly, how could you not be happy anywhere when this little smiling ball of love is with you?
