A day at Sea World

Thursday, May 31, 2012

So, a couple of weeks ago, Gui's company invited its employees and their families out to San Antonio to spend a day at Sea World.  I meant to post pictures earlier, but just haven't gotten around to sorting through them all until this week.

It had been at least 15 years since I'd been to Sea World, and I really had no idea whether my 8-months pregnant self would enjoy the day or regret going.  Gui, having never been, was pretty enthusiastic about seeing animals he'd never seen before, and his excitement totally rubbed off on me.

It turned out to be a really fun day.  We pet a stingray, watched a show with a Beluga whale (Gui had never seen one in person before), witnessed a fish feeding and saw some penguins.  Seeing the penguins was Gui's least favorite part.  We've seen a couple of documentaries on penguins and their migration patterns, so it was a little sad to see them confined to such a small, enclosed space with fake snow and not much to do.
But, my favorite part of the trip was watching Gui pet a dolphin.  My big belly kept me from reaching over the wall to feel their rubbery skin, but I really enjoyed watching the silvery mammals come up to the side to get a rub and then scurry off with a big splash.  It definitely made me feel like a kid again.

There was tons more to do at the park, but the day was getting hotter by the minute and my feet were kind of over all the walking after the first half of the day, so we headed out after a late lunch.  It felt a little weird being there without kids, too.  We were definitely one of the few couples there without a stroller or crying toddler, so we were happy to be able to take advantage of our freedom to bail out early.  I'm not sure if that'll be the case the next time we visit.
